Hebridean Painting Holiday North Uist, Outer Hebrides 16th - 30th August 2008

Hebridean Painting Holiday

ENJOY THE MAGIC OF THE HEBRIDES

The islands of North Uist and South Uist offer superb scenery which ranges from miles of white sandy beaches to stretches of rugged rocky coastline. It is a land of great pictorial contrasts. There are hundreds of lochs watched over by dark hills and endless stretches of the beautiful Machair pasturelands, famous for their flowers, butterflies and birds. And everywhere there are old crofts, bearing witness to a way of life sustained largely unchanged for a millennium but dramatically altered over the last century.

Hebridean life is dominated by the weather and the sea. The skies seem bigger than anywhere else. Great banks of cloud roll in from the Atlantic, ever changing, producing effects of light and colour of unmatched brilliance. In the evening with the spectacular sunsets, beyond St. Kilda the light transforms both sea and land.

As well as their pictorial beauty, the islands are rich in history, with chambered cairns, wheelhouses, prehistoric ports and Stone Age settlements. There are two bird sanctuaries. Balranald Reserve, on the west of North Uist, lies on the edge of the area where the holiday rents are situated. The accommodation is in three cottages all appointed to the highest standard, mealtimes are all in Tigharry School while the other houses have evening facilities.

Daily excursions, to different beauty spots, will be run by the tutor, who is a professional artist. A normal day will offer morning tuition or visits to one or other places of interest as a group. Many may wish to reserve their evenings for the sunsets. Beginners are welcome and everyone will be given individual attention during the course.
